Rest in the Hope of Jesus

HopeBack during the depression, Clarence Darrow, a brilliant lawyer, was addressing the members of a black church in Chicago. Most of the people were desperately poor. There weren’t enough jobs to go around. They had very little prospects for the future. As he spoke, Darrow recounted all their troubles. But then he noted how joyfully they had sung earlier. He asked them a very pointed question. “What do you have to sing about?” At that point a lady in the congregation jumped to her feet and shouted, “We’ve got Jesus to sing about.”

What better answer can there be than that? “We’ve got Jesus to sing about.” That truth has comforted people in every generation since Jesus walked this earth. Whatever our situation may be. Whatever problems we may have. Whatever struggle we are going through, we still have Jesus.

It has been a hard time for many of us and others who we know. Some have faced devastating illness during this year. Others have suffered loss of loved ones. Some have lost their jobs and their economic future seems uncertain. But do you know what I see most of all in the faces of Christ followers? Even in the midst of despair, there is hope. And that hope comes only from the knowledge that God is with us every step of our lives. Rest in the hope of Christ. God is with you.
